Soybean oil

The soybean plant is one of the oldest plants ever cultivated. The Chinese were cultivating this crop as early as 2800 BC. Around 1700 AD, people in Indonesia became familiar with it and its use spread from there to North Africa.

It was not until 1829 that soybeans arrived in the US where they became widely cultivated. The US is currently the largest producer of soybeans: almost two-thirds of the world’s production. In large parts of the world, soybeans have become a staple part of the human diet. The beans yield a bright yellow oil containing vitamin E and valuable fatty acids. Soybean oil is also used to make such products as soy sauce and margarine. In its pure form, this mildly flavoured oil is an outstanding edible oil. It is the most commonly used oil in the oil mixtures that make up salad oil, margarine, and sautéing and frying products.
